Dental sealants are designed to protect a person’s back teeth from damage and decay. They consist of a thin layer of acrylic that is painted onto the outer surface of one’s molars. Once applied, they provide an effective barrier against harmful bacteria and acids. Sealants also make teeth easier to clean and maintain by smoothing out any deep grooves and fissures that are present.
The deep grooves and fissures that are commonly located on a person’s back teeth contain roughly 75 percent of all tooth decay that is found inside the mouth. These areas are known to be difficult to reach, even with proper brushing and flossing techniques. By smoothing out these rough surfaces with dental sealants, it becomes significantly easier to clean and maintain one’s back molars. When cared for properly, sealants are built to last for several years.
Children and teenagers often receive dental sealants as a way of protecting their teeth as their brushing and flossing skills continue to develop. Baby teeth tend to benefit greatly from dental sealants because of the deep grooves and fissures that they typically feature; however, dental sealants can also be applied to permanent teeth, and many adults choose to receive this form of treatment because of the benefits that sealants can provide.
Applying dental sealants only takes a couple of minutes per tooth. The tooth is thoroughly cleaned and dried, and etching gel is applied in order to roughen their outer surfaces and allow the sealant coating to bond more easily. Acrylic sealant is carefully painted onto the teeth, and the coating is allowed to dry completely. Once completed, we will make sure that the teeth have been fully sealed.
